The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations’ semi-finals are set to kick off with a smouldering showdown soaked in significance between two African superpowers - it’s Senegal vs Egypt in Tangier on Wednesday afternoon. The winner of this match between the Lions of Teranga and the Pharaohs will meet either Nigeria or Morocco in the grand final on January 18. Check out our match prediction below.
Few can forget the nail-biting finish to the 2021 AFCON final, where Senegal beat Egypt in a tense penalty shootout to claim their first-ever continental title. A month later, the Teranga Lions also denied the North Africans entry to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, again ousting them on spot kicks in the CAF qualifiers in DR Congo.
Fair to say, then, this is about more than just progression for the Pharaohs; it is an opportunity to exact their revenge against a side that has gotten the better of them in recent times. This will be the fifth time these teams meet at the AFCON finals, and there is nothing to split them, with each side having won two games apiece, while one ended level. Let’s get into the match prediction!

Senegal - Egypt: Form Analysis
Senegal have been excellent at AFCON 2025 and are the second-favourite to clinch the title this year. They romped through the group stage, finishing top of Group D with seven points in their three games (W2 D1).
In the knockout stages, the Teranga Lions cruised past Sudan 3-1 in the Round of 16 before delivering a resilient performance to overcome Mali 1-0 in the quarter-final here in Tangier last weekend.
The West Africans have now won 10 of their last 12 matches across all competitions (D1 L1) and kept clean sheets in eight games during that period, including three in five here in Morocco.
All of Senegal’s AFCON 2025 matches have been played in Tangier!
Meanwhile, Egypt also won their group but were far less convincing. They needed a late goal to defeat Zimbabwe and a contentious penalty to overcome South Africa before playing out a stalemate against Angola.
The Pharaohs’ last-16 clash went to extra time before they netted twice against Benin, while in their quarter-final, they remained solid in defence to hold off reigning champions the Ivory Coast 3-2.
The North African powerhouse have only won four of their last 10 games in regulation time, and they have only managed to keep two clean sheets during this period. Notably, six of Egypt’s nine goals in this tournament have come in the second half or in extra time.

Senegal & Egypt Squad Analysis
While he did not register a goal contribution in the quarter-final, Sadio Mane has notched up three assists and a goal in this competition. He now has 19 goal contributions at the AFCON over the past decade - more than any other player in the competition across this period.
Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye was the player who came up with the winner against Mali last weekend, which may be enough for him to be given the nod to start this match by Pape Thiaw ahead of Ismaila Sarr.
The big question for Thiaw, though, will be around who should lead the line in this match between Habib Diallo and Nicolas Jackson, both of whom have been unused substitutes in two games each in this competition.
Mo Salah reached 100 goal contributions for Egypt in the victory over the Ivory Coast!
The Liverpool attacker has once again lived up to his nickname “the Egyptian King” here in Morocco, as he has scored four goals and provided one assist in four games, with three of his goals being match-winners.
Omar Marmoush picked up his second goal of AFCON 2025 against the Elephants at the weekend, and Hossam Hassan is likely to maintain faith in the Manchester City man to lead the line here.
Ahmed Fatouh replaced the injured Mohamed Hamdi in the Pharaohs backline over the weekend, but he did score an own goal in that match and will need a more assured performance against the Senegalese attack.
