Sebastian Baez bids to reach his third clay court final of the year. The third seed faces fifth seeded Arthur Fils in Saturday's first semi-final in this Hamburg clay court tournament. In the final, the winner will face either Alexander Zverev or Pedro Martinez.
Baez has already won two clay court titles this year, both coming on the South American tour. His form hasn't quite reached those levels since and it's been a tough journey this week for the Argentinian to the semi-final
The world number 19 started well with a straight sets first round win over unseeded Dominik Koepfer but it’s been a lot harder since. Baez then beat unseeded Dusan Lajovic and then seventh seed Luciano Darderi but lost the first set in both matches.
His run to this semi-final has taken him to 18th in the live rankings and he holds the same position in the Live Race.
Fifth seed Arthur Fils caused a shock on Friday when beating second-seeded Holger Rune. The Frenchman is now up to a new career-high of 24th. This is his second ATP Tour semi-final of the year, the other being in Auckland (on a hard court) back in January.
Fils struggled in the first round and had to come from behind to get the victory over unseeded Jaume Munar. A straight sets victory over Laslo Djere followed and then on Friday,came the win against Rune. He won the first set 6-4 and was 4-1 ahead in the second when his opponent retired.
