Match 33 of the 2024 Indian Premier League will see the Punjab Kings taking on the Mumbai Indians on Thursday afternoon. The hosts are currently in seventh place in the league standings, while the visitors are eighth. The 2024 edition of the IPL is proving to be another difficult campaign for the Punjab Kings. They are currently one of three teams tied on four points after six games, four points behind the playoff places. PBKS lost their last match by three wickets to the Rajasthan Royals which was their fourth loss of the competition. That followed defeats against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants, and Royal Challengers Bangalore, while their two wins came against the Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans. While the Kings’ batting lineup has yet to find their best form in this competition, their bowlers have been good. Kagiso Rabada and Arshdeep Singh are both on nine wickets each, while Sam Curren is on eight. The hosts won the last match between these sides by 13 runs but are the underdogs in this one. 

Meanwhile, the five-time champions, the Mumbai Indians, are having a very poor tournament by their own standards. They are currently third-bottom and, like their opponents here, have only won two of their six matches to date. Those victories came against the Royal Challengers and the Delhi Capitals, while they suffered defeats to the Titans, Sunrisers, Royals, and most recently, the Super Kings by 20 runs on Sunday. Rohit Sharma finally found some form against CSK over the weekend, scoring 105* in 63 balls. With that knock, he moved to fourth place in the race for the orange cap, currently on 261 runs in six innings. Jasprit Bumrah has been the main contributor with the ball, currently on ten wickets, while Gerald Coetzee is on nine wickets, and the pair are ranked second and eighth, respectively, in the purple cap standings. Mumbai need a positive result here, or they will be facing a very difficult second half of the group stage to try and reach the playoffs.
