Pedro Cachin begins his Swiss Open title defence with a first-round showdown against sixth seed Matteo Berrettini. The winner of this first career meeting between these two will play Daniel Elahi Galan or Vit Kopriva next. Cachin triumphed here last season and in the process became the first non-European to do so in 10 years. This was his maiden tour victory and he will be determined to play as a champion and defend his crown.

The Argentine has had a shaky year alternating between the tour and challenger circuits. He has compiled an 11-20 record and has been unable to win more than twice at a tour event. Cachin, currently placed 110th in the live rankings, is coming off a semi-final run at the Braunschweig Challenger. Though he has struggled, it is worth noting that Cachin’s victories this year have all come on clay.

Matteo Berrettini has never failed to reach the final in his two appearances here. He will hope to maintain this and possibly secure his second Gstaad title. The Italian triumphed here in 2018 without losing a set throughout the tournament to mark an exceptional debut.

He did not return until two seasons ago when he lost in the final to defending champion Casper Ruud. An eight-time tour champion, Berrettini is having a strong year. He has claimed 15 wins in 21 outings and has contested two finals already. One of which, in Marrakech, he won to end a two-year wait for a tour crown.

He is coming off a second-round Wimbledon exit to end a successful grass campaign. Berrettini, who has lost only once on clay this year, has dropped 23 places in the live ranking. After losing 130 ranking points, he is now placed 82nd.
