In-form Paula Badosa begins her Wuhan Open campaign in the first round against world number 107 Ajla Tomljanovic. This Tuesday match will be their fourth career meeting and the winner will battle Wang Xinyu or Caroline Dolehide. Read on for our prediction.

Badosa is making her debut in Wuhan and will hope to produce another deep run at a WTA 1000 event. The Spaniard has been in fine form this year and among the highlights of her season have been two WTA 1000 semi-finals.

That was in Cincinnati and Beijing more recently. Badosa has been in spectacular form in the second half of the season and has won 18 of her last 22 matches. All 18 wins have been on hard courts. This run began in Washington where she claimed her first title of the season.

The four-time tour champion has won 34 matches with 23 coming on hard courts. Badosa, who has two wins against Tomljanovic, starts a new week up to 15th in the WTA standings.

Ajla Tomljanovic defeated Badosa in three sets the last time they met. That was two seasons ago in Cincinnati, ending a run of two successive defeats against the Spaniard.

She will be hoping to tie up this series and with her red-hot form, she will be confident of this. The Australian, who is on a five-match winning streak, is coming off a title success at the Hong Kong Challenger.

In Hong Kong, four of her opponents were top 100 ranked players. Despite having an inconsistent season, Tomljanovic has produced some superb results. The 31-year-old had a runner-up finish in Birmingham, defeating two top 40-ranked players.

Tomljanovic’s success in Hong Kong has propelled her 21 places and into 86th in the live ranking.
