Seventh seed Nuno Borges begins his Romanian Open campaign with a first-round showdown with unseeded Stan Wawrinka. The winner will then take on either Corentin Moutet or Denis Shapovalov for a place in the quarterfinals. Nuno Borges has had more than 10 days to reenergize and will be eager to get going here. The Portuguese number one was last on the court on home soil in Estoril where he made the quarterfinals. This was his joint best result at a tour event this season. Borges has alternated between the tour and challenger circuits and has compiled a 14-10 record. The highlight of his season came in the Phoenix Challenger which he won. The 27-year-old starts things off in Bucharest ranked 55th in the ATP. Borges is a strong clay court performer and has won over 110 matches on the surface. Two of his wins this season have come in three outings on clay.

Stan Wawrinka is an exceptional clay court performer and has won over 150 matches on the surface in his career. This has resulted in one Grand Slam title as well as a Masters 1000 crown. The 39-year-old, who is in the twilight years of his career, will hope to tap into this form once again. Wawrinka has struggled with his form this year and has managed just two wins in eight outings. Those two wins have however come on clay where he has made six appearances thus far. Currently on a two-match skid, Wawrinka was last on the court a week ago in Monte Carlo. The Swiss former world number three arrives in Bucharest having moved up two places to 84th in the live rankings.
