Nicolas Jarry is up against Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the Monte Carlo Masters first round. The winner faces a second round match in this clay court tournament against 12th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. Jarry is 22nd in the live rankings and five places lower in the ATP Race. It’s been a successful year for him on clay with a run to the final in Buenos Aires. That included him beating Carlos Alcaraz and in the last eight and Etcheverry. He also reached the last eight in Santiago on clay and more recently the quarterfinals in Miami. He’s won three clay court titles with the same number of runner-up spots. Last year saw him beat Etcheverry to win the Geneva title. A successful 2023 also saw him get to the last 16 at Roland Garros and the third round in this Masters 1000 tournament.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry is ranked 31st at present so will need a good spell of form to ensure he’s seeded at Roland Garros. His year hasn’t gone as well as Jarry’s and he’s 60th in the ATP Race. Last week saw him get to the last four in the US Clay Court Championships. Before that he’d reached quarterfinals in the Cordoba and Buenos Aires clay court tournaments. He was off the courts for three years after having to retire against Jarry in Argentina when a set all. Etcheverry was a quarterfinalist at Roland Garros last year but this is his first time in the Monte Carlo Masters. We tip Jarry to win this match.
