Match 32 of the 2024 T20 World Cup will see New Zealand taking on Uganda at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Saturday morning. The Black Caps are bottom of Group C while the Cricket Cranes are third. New Zealand are on the verge of elimination from the T20 World Cup, having lost their first two games. The first was an 84-run loss to Afghanistan, where they were bowled out for just 75 runs chasing down 159/6 with none of their batsmen managing more than 20 runs. Match two was a closer-run affair against the West Indies, but they came up 13 runs short chasing 149/9. Glenn Phillips scored 40(33) and Trent Boult took 3/16, but the West Indies have made the most of the familiar conditions and it felt as though they were in control of that match for the most part. As a result, anything aside from a win here will see the Black Caps bow out of the competition, while a victory may just prolong their campaign as Afghanistan need one more point to secure qualification to the next round alongside the Windies.

Meanwhile, Uganda are playing their final match of the group and while they are still mathematically in with a chance of finishing in the top two, it seems unlikely, given that Afghanistan and New Zealand both have two matches to play. The Cranes have suffered two hefty defeats in this year’s competition, with the first coming against the Blue Tigers, who knocked them over for just 58 runs in match one. A victory over Papua New Guinea followed before they managed just 39 runs all out against the West Indies last week, which was the joint-lowest total in T20 World Cup history. Still, having seen New Zealand’s performances in this competition, Uganda will feel that they are certainly in with a chance here, though it certainly not be easy.
