A maiden Champions Cup meeting between Munster and Aviron Bayonnais at Thomond Park will enter the history books on Saturday. A stop-start form in the URC leaves Munster fourth on 23 points while Bayonnais sit 10th in the Top 14. Munster will enter the clash as slight favourites having dispatched Glasgow Warriors 40-29 in their last outing. The reigning URC champions’ inconsistent form this season means that they have not won back-to-back URC games. The 2008 Champions Cup champions have however made their home a fortress, winning all games this season.

Bayonnais qualified for the Champions Cup following an eighth-place finish after years in the lower leagues. Just two seasons ago, Bayonnais were in the Pro D2, signifying their progress in recent years. Bayonnais head into the clash on the back of a morale-boosting 34-19 victory over bottom-placed Montpellier. The French side however have a sorry away record heading into this clash, having lost their last 13 games. Their overall form also inspires little confidence having suffered six losses in their last 10 games.
