It’s time for the ‘El Clasico’ of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the first Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings contest of the 2026 edition will be played at Wankhede. This match on Thursday between the 7th-placed MI and the 8th-placed CSK comes with our prediction of a home win.
Both teams have identical records of W2, L4 and it’s only the net run rate that’s keeping Mumbai ahead of Chennai. With a win potentially putting them in the top-four mix, this match provides both teams with an impressive opportunity.
A thumping 99-run win over Gujarat Titans on Monday helped Mumbai get their mojo back after four consecutive defeats. A stunning Tilak Varma century (101* off 45) helped shore up the batting, while Ashwani Kumar (4 for 24) impressed in his first match of the season.
Therein lies the problem, as there are no MI batsmen in the top-25 run scorers or top-12 bowlers in this IPL season.
Chennai lost to Hyderabad by 10 runs last Saturday, halting their mini-resurgence of two consecutive wins. Worryingly for CSK, they also lost Ayush Mhatre with an injury for the entire season.
That leaves Sanju Samson (192 runs) as their only representative in the top-25 run scorers this season. With the ball, though, Anshul Kamboj (13 wickets) had the ‘Purple Cap’ till Monday.

Our Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings Prediction
Mumbai v Chennai is the ‘El Clasico’ of the IPL and is a clash between two of the most successful teams of the competition. One of the standout performers and constants of this contest – MS Dhoni – could be missing this fixture; it is only the second time that CSK have played MI without him. Will that impact the result? Chennai’s lows this season have been dragging them down, despite a couple of wins in between.
Mumbai may edge this contest slightly, and our Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings prediction is Mumbai Indians wins.
