Qualifier McCartney Kessler takes on unseeded Ashlyn Krueger in round one of the Abu Dhabi Open. The winner will be facing third-seeded Daria Kasatkina in round two. Who'll make it through? Here's our match prediction.
Kessler may be the qualifier in this main draw but the American has already won one WTA title this year. That was in the Hobart International with players such as Elise Mertens, Elina Avanesyan and Dayana Yastremska all defeated.
It didn't go so well in the Australian Open with a first round loss to Shuai Zhang. Kessler was at 52nd in the last ranking list and had to qualify for this outdoor hard court tournament. Two qualifiers were won for the loss of only nine games.
Ashlyn Krueger was only two places above Kessler in the last ranking list. In the live rankings, the American is 51st. The 20-year-old made a strong start to the new year with quarter-finals reached in both Brisbane and Adelaide.
Two wins have come against top 16 ranked players this year with both Kalinskaya and Badosa beaten. Her last tournament was the Australian Open where Krueger lost in round one to Ajla Tomljanovic in three sets.
