Third seeded Jessica Pegula starts her bid to win two successive WTA 100 titles. Fresh from winning in Montreal, the American faces qualifier Martina Trevisan in round two of the Western & Southern Open. Pegula beat Liudmila Samsonova in Sunday's Montreal final, losing just one game. That tormament was badly hit by the weather and Pegula had a much lighter schedule than her opponent. Even so it was a massive win for the 29-year-old who had earlier beaten Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff to reach the final. Pegula may be number three in the world but the Montreal win was only the third WTA Tours singles title of her career. With two quarter final appearances in the past three years in this tournament, she'll hope to again go deep. Pegula has had two previous matches against Trevisan, both this year and won them both.

Martina Trevisan is 66th in the latest rankings and had to qualify to reach the main draw. Two matches had to be won and only one game was dropped in the first. It was tougher in the final qualifier though and Trevisan needed to go to a final set to get past Taylor Townsend. The first round saw her take on Bernarda Pera and the Italian player had to come from a set down to get to this match against Pegula. The three wins so far have taken her up to 52nd in the live rankings. Before this tournament, 18 of her 30 matches this year had been lost. This is her first hard court event since the end of March when reaching the last eight in Miami. Since then it's been a menu of clay and grass court tournaments for her. Pegula will have had a good rest since winning in Montreal and we go for her to win this in straight sets.
