Second seed Caroline Garcia begins her Washington Open campaign on Thursday with a second-round tie against the unseeded Marta Kostyuk. Marta Kostyuk defeated the wildcard Bianca Andreescu in the first round. She came back from a set down to win in two hours and 43 minutes. This was the perfect way to start her debut here and she will hope to keep the momentum going. Kostyuk has compiled a 20-13 record this year with 17 of her victories coming on hard court. Despite also incurring the majority of her defeats on the surface, Kostyuk has achieved her highlight of the year on hard court. In March, the Ukrainian won the inaugural ATX Open to achieve her first tour title. She will hope this form also allows her to win her first match against Garcia. The two have met twice before, but never on hard court. She is currently up one place to 33rd in the live ranking.

Caroline Garcia has won both encounters with Kostyuk which have happened to be on clay. Though it is now four years since they last battled each other, she will be confident of reprising her dominance. The world number six arrives in Washington to play her first match in three weeks. The Frenchwoman was last on the court in Wimbledon where she made the third round. She has compiled a 27-15 record in 2023 with the majority of her victories, 13, coming on hard court. Garcia has also played one of her two finals this season on hard court. Unlike Kostyuk, she is yet to win a title this season. Five of Garcia’s 11 tour titles have come on hard court. A quarterfinal showdown with either eighth seed Liudmila Samsonova or unseeded Sorana Cirstea awaits the winner.
