Champions Manchester City will be looking to go back to the top of the Premier League table this weekend when they take on Southampton at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Citizens are currently in second place in the league standings, while the Saints are second-bottom. Check out our match prediction below.
Manchester City have unsurprisingly been the dominant force in this fixture over the last two decades and enter this match unbeaten in their last 12 encounters with this opponent at home dating back to 2004. Southampton have managed only one win from their last 14 league matches against City, a 1-0 win at home in July 2020.
Expectedly, the hosts are very short-priced favourites according to the latest odds to win this match, but can the visitors pull off what would undoubtedly be the biggest shock of the season so far? Let’s get into the key stats in this one.

Manchester City - Southampton: Form Analysis
Following back-to-back draws against Arsenal and Newcastle United last month, Manchester City quickly refound their winning form, securing consecutive victories either side of the international break.
After downing Sparta Prague in the Champions League in midweek, the Citizens are still unbeaten in all competitions this season and are the only team yet to suffer defeat in the Premier League.
On home soil, the hosts have won three of their four league games this term and are unbeaten in 34 top-flight matches dating back to November 2022.
Man City are on their longest-ever unbeaten league run of 31 league games dating back to December 6!
Meanwhile, in almost complete contrast, Southampton are set to enter gameweek nine of the season still in search of their first victory back in the top flight.
The Saints have lost seven of their eight games this term, marking only the second time in history they have gone this long without a victory at the start of a season since 1998-99.
Notably, the visitors have already conceded 18 goals in this campaign, 10 of which have come on the road, including three in each of their last three outings.
In their last top-flight season, Southampton lost home and away to this opponent and conceded four goals in each match.

Manchester City & Southampton Squad Analysis
Kyle Walker sustained a knee injury while on international duty earlier this month and missed Man City’s trip to Wolves last week, as well as their Champions League match against Sparta Prague.
Kevin De Bruyne has now missed seven games since picking up a thigh injury last month and Pep Guardiola mentioned in the week that he will not rush the Belgian back into action.
The absence of De Bruyne seems to have had an impact on the output of City’s towering striker Erling Haaland, who has now gone over 300 Premier League minutes without a goal.
Rodri and Oscar Bobb remain Man City’s only long-term injury absentees at present!
Southampton were dealt a significant blow in their loss to Leicester last week, with Japan international Yukinari Sugawara sustaining an injury and he now likely to be sidelined for a few weeks.
In the same match, Will Smallbone picked up a hamstring strain, while Ryan Fraser was sent off, meaning the pair will be forced into watching briefs this weekend.
The remaining absentees for the visitors in this match are Gavin Bazunu (Achilles) and Juan Larios (knock).
