Lucky loser Mackenzie McDonald faces Quentin Halys in round one of the Shanghai Masters. 15th seed Jiri Lehecka will be the opponent for the winner in the next round. Time for our match prediction.

McDonald is down to 99th in the live rankings. The 30-year-old was beaten by Japanese teenager Rei Sakamoto in the final qualifying round. Withdrawals then saw the American reinstated as a lucky loser.

He has been in good form in recent weeks with a run to the last four of the Jingshan Challenger Tour event. Earlier this year he was the runner-up in the Challenger Tour tournament played in San Diego. Five of his last seven ATP Tour main draw matches have ended in defeat.

Quentin Halys has struggled on this surface in 2025 with only 11 of his 26 matches being won. His best run by far was when reaching the semi-finals in Dubai. It’s been a struggle in recent months though with just one of his last 11 matches being won.

That run in Dubai remains the only time he’s made it past round two of an ATP Tour hard court tournament this year.  Often a lucky loser goes on to make the most of ther reprieve. We tip McDonald to win this.
