Mackenzie McDonald and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, both unseeded, will square off on Friday at the 2023 Canadian Open. McDonald has been in fine form in what is his fourth appearance here. He has won his previous three rounds without dropping a set. One of those to fall under his racket was sixth seed Andrey Rublev in the second round. To advance to this round, McDonald overcame the challenge of crowd favourite Milos Raonic by the loss of six games. This was his 16th victory in 24 outings on hard court this year. In a campaign marred by inconsistency, hard court has been a solid ground to play on for the 28-year-old. McDonald has compiled a 25-21 record thus far and before this season, he had never gone past the first round here. Advancing to this round has thrust him into a new career high in the live ranking as he is currently placed 43rd.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has also had his best moments this season on hard court. The surface has seen the majority, 13, of his 25 victories. He has also defeated a top-five-seeded player in Toronto and this should have him even more confident. In the last round, the Spaniard battled for well over three hours to down third seed Casper Ruud. He won tiebreakers in the first and third sets. This was his first match in which he had dropped a set in the competition. In his first two rounds, he lost a combined five games, three coming against 13th seed and former Rogers Cup champion Alexander Zverev. Davidovich Fokina, who is up to 30th in the live ranking, had also not advanced past the first round here before this season. The winner of this quarterfinal showdown will set up a semifinal tie against either Daniil Medvedev or unseeded Alex de Minaur.
