Fourth seed Anna Blinkova and unseeded Linda Fruhvirtova will on Wednesday face off at the Ningbo Open. Fruhvirtova had to come from a set down to win her first-round tie against Rebeka Masarova in three sets. It was a crucial win as it also ended a run of nine straight defeats. Fruhvirtova has struggled all through 2023 and has lost nine more matches than the 13 she has won. Of her 22 defeats, 13 have come on hard court, a surface where seven of her victories have been recorded. The Czech number eight is currently up to 112th place in the live ranking.
Blinkova has also struggled this season, but has fared much better than Fruhvirtova. She has compiled a 26-23 record and won 11 matches in 22 outings on hard court. The Russian won her opener here in straight sets, defeating the qualifier Viktoria Hruncakova by the loss of eight games. Blinkova had lost four consecutive matches before arriving in Ningbo. The win has nudged her up one place to 39th in the live ranking. Both Fruhvirtova and Blinkova are making their Ningbo debuts. The winner of this second-round showdown will next play either eighth-seed Lucia Bronzetti or unseeded Kateryna Baindl.
