Leylah Fernandez is in her first WTA quarter-final of the year. The eighth seed faces unseeded Ashlyn Krueger for a place in the last four of the Abu Dhabi Open. Here’s our match prediction.

Fernandez is 27th in the live rankings and winning this quarter-final can see her climb to 23rd. The Canadian last reached a WTA semi-final in Hong Kong last November. It’s been an inconsistent start to the new year, though she has had some tough draws.

Two of her losses have been to Coco Gauff and the other to future title winner Ekaterina Alexandrova.

So far this week, wins have come against lucky loser Moyuka Uchijima and then Lulu Sun. Only three games were lost in the latter. In the Live WTA Race, the Canadian is 22nd and that's four places above her opponent.

Ashlyn Krueger is up to 50th in the live rankings. This is her third quarter-final of 2025 having also reached this stage in Brisbane and Adelaide. These players have shared their two previous meetings with Krueger winning the one played on this surface.

Her good form has continued in Abu Dhabi with wins over McCartney Kessler and third seed Daria Kasatkina. Both matches went to a final set with Krueger having to come from behind to beat Kasatkina.
