Pablo Carreno Busta missed several months of court time due to elbow surgery. He slipped down to 299th in the latest rankings. Recent weeks have seen him get some good results.

The last 32 was reached in Montreal and he went a round further in Cincinnati last week. Now in Winston Salem he's in his first quarter-final of the year. Round one saw him beat qualifier Omni Kumar. He then defeated 13th seed Alexander Shevchenko, losing only six games.

In the third round, the Spaniard beat unseeded Aleksandar Vukic but needed three sets after losing the second. He's now up to 251st in the live rankings. The winner of this match will play either 11th seed Alex Michelsen or wild card Christopher Eubanks.

Learner Tien was a career-high 230th in the latest rankings. He's easily beaten that with this run to the last eight in Winston Salem. The 18-year-old has made it into the world's top 200 and is 191st in the live rankings.

Tien had never won an ATP Tour main draw match before this week. He had to win two matches to get into the first round proper and both were won in straight sets. In the main draw, he's had two matches t hat have gone to a final set. 

He had to come from behind to beat Tim Schoolkate in round one and then beat ninth seed Fabian Marozsan in the next round with two tie-breaks played.  Round three saw the American defeat unseeded Thiago Seyboth Wild in straight sets. We tip Busta to end his run and move into the last four.
