Former two-time champion Stefanos Tsitsipas faces unseeded Laslo Djere in round one of the Monte Carlo Masters. Tsitsipas is the 12th seed for this outdoor clay court Masters 1000 tournament. The winner will go into a second round match against either Nicolas Jarry or Tomas Martin Etcheverry. Tsitsipas won this title in both 2021 and 2022 but only made the quarterfinals last year. He’s been a bit inconsistent in 2024 and is only 24th in the Live Race. His best performance so far has been reaching the last four in the Los Cabos hard court tournament. This is his first clay court tournament of the year an the former Roland Garros finalist will be hoping for improved form.

To reach round two, Laslo Djere must beat Stefanos Tsitisipas for the first time. He trails the Greek player 4-0 in previous meetings. Two have been on clay courts and one was here in Monte Carlo two years ago. Djere is 34th in the live rankings so in with a chance of being seeded at Roland Garros this summer. He’ll need to improve his form though as he’s down at 157th in the Live Race. His last two matches have been lost. The most recent defeat was to Fabio Fognini in the second round of the clay court event held in Marrakech. Before that he’d lost at the same stage in the clay court tournaments held in Buenos Aires and Rio. Djere’s best run in Monte Carlo was getting to round three two years ago. We tip Tsitsipas to win this in straight sets.
