Jordan Thompson is the 32nd seed in the Italian Open but will do well to reach round three. He takes on qualifier Thiago Monteiro in round two of this outdoor clay court Masters tournament. Whoever is the winner could face fifth seed Casper Ruud in the third round. Thompson is the world number 35 but just squeezed into the seedings for this tournament due to withdrawals of players ranked above him. He's 27th in the ATP Live Race but mainly because of his success on hard courts. On clay, he did get to the last eight in Houston but didn't beat anyone ranked in the top 90. He's lost three of his last four matches on clay with the most recent tournament in Madrid seeing him lose to Pavel Kotov. He's 1-1 in previous matches with Monteiro but this is their first meeting on clay and their last match was in 2021.

Thiago Monteiro is back in the top 100 after making it to the second round in Rome. He's 106th in the latest rankings but up to 94th in the live list. Beating Thompson will see him rise another three places but he's still well below his career-high of 61st achieved in 2022. The Brazilian won both of his qualifying matches in straight sets, including beating Corentin Moutet who was the fourth seed. Round one saw Monteiro beat Gael Monfils in straight sets.to continue his good form. In the Madrid Masters, he reached the last 32 and that included beating Stefanos Tsitsipas. Other performances on clay this year have produced a quarter-final in Rio. We tip him to beat Thompson to reach round three in Rome for the first time.
