India will head into the T20 World Cup as the number one-ranked team in the shortest format. They are also carrying good momentum, having beaten South Africa by 30 runs in their warm-up match in midweek.
Leading up to the World Cup, the Men in Blue secured a 4-1 T20 series victory over New Zealand last month and defeated the Proteas 3-1 in December. India A also beat the USA by 38 runs on February 2.
Over the last three years, India have won the Men’s Asian Games Cricket, the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 T20 Asia Cup, justifying their place as the clear favourites for the title this year.

The headline omission from India’s 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup was that of Test and ODI captain, Shubman Gill, who has struggled to find his best form in the shortest version in recent times.
While Sanju Samson was expected to be an automatic choice to open the batting, he has not been at his best of late. Ishan Kishan, meanwhile, has been in tremendous form in the lead-up and is now likely feature at the top of the order.
One player whose place is in no doubt is Abhishek Shama, who was the team’s highest T20 run scorer in 2025 and has risen to become the world number one in the T20 batter rankings.

Given the gulf in class between these sides, it is unsurprising to see India installed as massive favourites in this match, and given their recent form, it’s difficult to see anything but a win for the Men in Blue in this one.
