Slovenia face Hungary In the fifth and sixth place play-off in the Men’s European Handball Championships. Their performance in these championships is a big improvement on the 16th place they managed at the last championships four years ago. They started the Preliminary Round in Group D and won that by three points from Norway. WIns came against Faroe Islands, Poland and Norway. The latter of those victories was only by a single goal but guaranteed they took two points into the Main Round. That round didn’t go quite so well with losses to both Sweden and Portugal. They recovered to get wins over the Netherlands and Denmark to clinch third place and qualify for this fifth and sixth round play-off.

Hungary can achieve their highest finish in the European Championships if winning this match. Their current best performance was in 1998 when finishing in sixth place. They've certainly done better in these championships than in the last Euros when ending in a disappointing 15th position. The 2024 championships began with the playing in Group C of the Preliminary Round and they won all three of their games with wins over Iceland, Montenegro and Serbia. In the Main Round, the Hungarians lost their unbeaten record when going down 30-29 to Austria. They then got back on track with a win over Croatia but hopes of a semi-final appearances ended with defeats by Germany and France. We tip this game to be won by Slovenia.
