Seventh seed Holger Rune begins his 2024 Monte Carlo Masters campaign. He takes on qualifier Sumit Nagal in round two of this outdoor clay court Masters 1000 tournament. Up next for the winner could be a match against ninth seed Grigor Dimitrov. Rune is seventh in the latest ranking list but down to 11th in the live rankings. That's because he's defending the points earned when reaching the final here last year. In the Live ATP Race, Rune is in 17th place. He had a good hard court season with one final reached and two semifinals. This is his first clay court tournament of the year and last year saw him reach two Masters 1000 finals on this surface. As well as getting to the Monte Carlo final, he also made it to the title decider in Rome. Rune also got to the last eight at Roland Garros for the second successive year so is likely to be a major player in the coming weeks.

Sumit Nagal has had to win three matches to get to this stage in Monte Carlo. He was a career high 93rd in the latest rankings but up to 80th in the live list. The Indian number one beat Fabio Cobolli and Facundo Diaz Acosta (both seeded) to make it into the first round. This is his first time in the main draw in Monte Carlo. He then beat went a set down to Matteo Arnaldi but fought back to win in three. Last week saw him get to the last 16 in the clay court tournament played in Marrakech. This is much tougher and we tip Holger Rune to win in straight sets.
