Wild card Gael Monfils faces unseeded Jordan Thompson in the Monte Carlo Masters first round. Whoever wins this outdoor clay court Masters 1000 match has a tough task ahead of them. The scheduled second round opponent is the fourth seed Daniil Medvedev. Monfils is 42nd in the live rankings and seven places lower in the ATP Race. His most recent tournament was on clay and he lost in round two to Marton Fucsovics in Estoril. This year has produced some good results for the 37-year-old. He got to the last four in Doha and the fourth round at Indian Wells, both on hard courts. On clay, Monfils reached the final in Monte Carlo eight years ago and this is the first time that the French player has appeared here since then.

Jordan Thompson is 33rd in the live rankings so will hope to be seeded at Roland Garros. He's 23rd in the Live ATP Race and this is his second clay court tournament of the year. Last week he got to the last eight in Houston. One title has been won by the Australian in 2024. That was the hard court tournament played in Los Cabos. He’s having a better year on clay already as he lost each of his three matches in 2023. Thompson has lost in round one at Roland Garros in each of the past four years. His one appearance in Monte Carlo saw him lose in round two. We tip Monfils to get the win.
