Alejandro Tabilo is the second seed for the indoor hard court Almaty Open. In the quarter finals he faces unseeded Gabriel Diallo. For the winner, there's a semi-final against either fourth seed Francisco Cerundolo or unseeded Alexander Shevchenko. Here's our match prediction.
Tabilo is the world number 23 but was a career-high 19th three months ago. When 2024 began, the Chilean was only 82nd but he's had the best year of his career. It started with him winning the hard court tournament played in Auckland.
Since then, he's won titles on both clay and grass courts. He has been struggling for consistency in recent months and had lost nine of his last ten matches before the start of this tournament in Almaty.
This is his first last eight appearance since winning the Mallorca grass court tournament in June. His first match in this tournament saw him beat unseeded Maxmilian Marterer in straight sets for the loss of six games.
Gabriel Diallo was down at 118th in the latest ranking list. He's up to 107th in the live rankings and that's only four places below the career-high he set last month. The 23-year-old Canadian is in his first ATP Tour quarter final of 2024.
Most of his success this year has come on the Challenger Tour with a recent semi-final appearance in Hangzhou. So far in Almaty, he's beaten Christopher O'Connell and Borna Coric without losing a set. Both matches have seen a tie-break played.
