Copa Libertadores Presentation and Prediction 2025 - Football

Copa Libertadores

The Copa Libertadores is undoubtedly the most important and coveted club competition in South America, comparable in stature to the Champions League for us Europeans. With its long tradition, historic teams and great competitiveness, it's more than just a football competition - it's a major event that attracts fans from all over the world!

The desire of South American teams is not only to win their own league, but also to lift the Copa Libertadores trophy. This major competition, organized by CONMEBOL, brings together the best teams from the 10 confederated nations: the champions of each league and the most consistent teams who have finished in the top positions over the course of the season take part. Because of this detail, the competition will once again be very intense in 2025, and it will be no exception.

The tournament runs from February 5 (date of the start of the preliminary phase) to November 29, when we'll know the identity of the grand champion. To mark the occasion, our experts are offering you some carefully thought-out predictions for the Copa Libertadores, so don't hesitate to take advantage!

Predicting the winner of the competition: who will win the Copa Libertadores 2025?

examine Copa Libertadores results

In the last 6 editions, the Copa Libertadores trophy has always fallen into the hands of Brazilian teams. For the 2025 edition, it's shaping up to be more of the same. Flamengo and Palmeiras have been the two standout teams in this year's competitions and appear to be on a collision course to face off in the final.

As to which side we give the edge to, we're leaning towards Flamengo. Mengao have looked unplayable at times this season and are proving why they are considered the best team on the continent. They have a star-studded team after some shrewd recruitment in recent transfer windows, and a manager in Filipe Luis who has looked right at home in the dugout since taking over in 2024. With their superb squad depth and deadly attacking options, they should have the requisite quality to lift the coveted trophy for the first time since 2022. Our Copa Libertadores 2025 prediction: Flamengo to lift the trophy!

Copa Libertadores semi-final predictions

Only four teams remain in the quest to win the most coveted prize in South American football. Check out the fixtures below:

  • Palmeiras vs LDU Quito
  • Flamengo vs Racing Club

After correctly predicting three of the four quarter-final matchups correctly, with only River Plate letting us down, we’re back to give our thoughts on the semis!

It’s hard to argue against this looking destined to be a final between the two standout Brazilian teams in this competition: Flamengo and Palmeiras,

Flamengo weren’t at their best in their quarter-final tie against Estudiantes but they still managed to get through - the mark of a championship-quality team. They’ll now face off against another title-winning team in Racing Club, who lifted the Copa Sudamericana last year. While this is sure to be another physical, drag-out war, we can’t look past Flamengo’s overall quality which should be enough to get them over the line.

On the other side, Palmeiras were also given a tough battle against River Plate, but the Brazilians managed to come from behind in the second leg to wrap up a 5-2 aggregate win.

LDU Quito have done marvelously to make it to the semi-finals of the Copa for the first time since they were crowned champions in 2007-08. The first leg in the high altitude of Quito will be the key to this tie. If Palmeiras can walk away with a result, or even just a narrow defeat, then they should be able to make it through to the final with the home support behind them in the return leg.

Copa Libertadores quarter-final predictions

South America’s top clubs move one step closer to claiming the continent’s biggest prize as we reach the quarter-finals in the 2025 Copa Libertadores! We correctly predicted six of the eight matchups in the round of 16 and we’ll give you our thoughts on who will advance to the semis.

First, let’s take a look at the fixtures:

  • Velez Sarsfield vs Racing Club
  • River Plate vs Palmeiras
  • LDU Quito vs São Paulo
  • Flamengo vs Estudiantes

An all-Argentine clash in the first matchup of the quarter-finals sees Velez taking on Racing Club. Racing have plenty of experience in high-stakes cup fixtures and this team’s triumph in last year’s Copa Sudamericana should serve them well here. We’ll back La Academia to go through.

River Plate vs Palmeiras is a tie worthy of the final and both teams will feel a bit hard done by having such a tough matchup at this stage. There is likely going to be very little between these two giants and it very well could end up going to penalties. Still, we think Marcelo Gallardo’s River Plate will ultimately survive against a very good Palmeiras side.

LDU Quito were excellent in the round of 16, knocking out defending champions Botafogo after a dominant 2-0 performance in Ecuador to overturn a 1-0 first leg deficit. They’ll be full of confidence as they come up against another Brazilian club in São Paulo. The home field advantage in the high altitude of Quito could wind up making the difference. We’ll take Albos to advance.

Finally, tournament favourites Flamengo square off against Estudiantes. Mengão have been on a rampage lately and we don’t believe Estudiantes have enough about them to cause an upset here.

Copa Libertadores Round of 16 predictions

The Round of 16 gets underway on 12 August! Check out the matchups and our predictions below (all times BST):

  • Fortaleza vs Velez - 12 August, 23:00
  • Atlético Nacional vs Sao Paulo - 13 August, 01:30
  • Peñarol vs Racing Club - 13 August, 01:30
  • Cerro Porteño vs Estudiantes - 13 August, 23:00
  • Flamengo vs Internacional - 14 August, 01:30
  • Botafogo vs LDU Quito - 14 August, 23:00
  • Libertad vs River Plate - 15 August, 01:30
  • Universitario vs Palmeiras - 15 August, 01:30

Velez won the Argentina Primera Division in 2024 but have struggled domestically so far in 2025. Fortaleza have been even worse and this is likely to be a tightly-contested, low-scoring tie. Velez should have enough to scrape by their Brazilian opposition and advance to the quarters.

Atletico Nacional vs Sao Paulo is an intriguing clash. If the Colombians can take advantage of the first leg home match at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot, they have what it takes to advance. Peñarol made an impressive run to the semis last season but the reigning Copa Sudamericana champions Racing Club should be too much to handle for the Uruguayans. It’s a similar situation with Paraguayan club Cerro, whose Argentinian opponents Estudiantes should have too much quality.

Flamengo are the bookmakers favourites to win the Copa and for good reason. Mengao are looking brilliant this season under manager Filipe Luis and should be able to eliminate their compatriots Internacional. Defending champions Botafogo are starting to find their feet under their new manager and LDU Quito will be a good measuring stick for them. We’ll back the Brazilians to get through. River Plate will also have big expectations with Marcelo Gallardo back at the helm. We think they can go deep in this competition and like them to eliminate Libertad. Finally, Palmeiras are top contenders for the Copa and Universitario shouldn’t present too much of a hurdle for heavyweight Brazilian side.

Beginners to sports betting - how does the Copa Libertadores work?

beginners betting tips

As South America's most important competition, the tournament naturally brings together the continent's top teams. It's also worth remembering that this cup includes many teams of totally different levels, given the economic disparity that exists even between South American countries (and which is also reflected in the sport).

It's important to remember that the campaign is long and comprises three specific stages: the qualifying stage, the group stage and the knockout matches. The qualifying stage is made up of three preliminary rounds, in which 19 teams are whittled down to just four. Those four teams then join the other 28 in the group stage, where 8 groups of 4 teams play each other twice in home and away fixtures. The top two from each group qualify for the knockout stage, while the third-placed teams go on to compete in the Copa Sudamericana.

Once this stage has been completed, we reach the third level, the knockout stages: from the Round of 16 to the semi-finals, there are two-legged matches, while the final is played in a single match. In all, 155 matches are played in a variety of climates, and in cities at both high and low altitudes. The styles of play and the fervor of the fans come together to create the complete package.

Here are the dates to remember:

  • First preliminary round - February 4 to 13, 2025
  • Second preliminary round - February 18 to 27, 2025
  • Third preliminary round - March 4 to 13, 2025
  • Group draw - March 19, 2025
  • Group phase - April 2 to May 28, 2025
  • Final phase draw - June 4, 2025
  • Round of 16 - August 12 to 21, 2025
  • Quarter-finals - September 16 to 25, 2025
  • Semi-finals - October 21 to 30, 2025
  • Final - November 29, 2025

The Copa Libertadores trophy

  • Examine the results of the teams in the South American competition.
  • Pay attention to any absences on the teams you wish to bet on in the Copa Libertadores.
  • Analyze the importance the teams attach to the Libertadores match.
  • Examine the head-to-head matchups between Copa Libertadores teams

Take a look at the South American competition team results

Our 2025 Copa Libertadores prediction

The first thing to do before placing a bet is to look at the form of the team you wish to bet on, i.e. its recent matches, but also those of the opponent in question.

It's important to know whether teams are in a good or bad stretch of form, which certainly influences their chances of winning, and to understand whether a team is approaching the match with more pressure or in a better frame of mind, which can clearly change things.

Watch out for absences or injuries to the teams you want to bet on in Copa Libertadores

When it comes to betting on football, team compositions are something to be taken into account. In the case of the Libertadores (and as is customary in South American football), suspensions for accumulating yellow cards occur after every three cards received, and there's also the traditional automatic suspension for a straight red.

There are also injuries which prevent players from playing a match, and which must be taken into account before placing a bet. So be careful before making your football predictions, and always consult the team news and the list of absentees for Copa Libertadores matches.

Analyze the importance that teams place on a Libertadores match

The Copa Libertadores is the latest addition to an already extremely tight and packed calendar, which has a major impact on clubs. It is therefore important to assess just how seriously a team is approaching a given match, as it is not uncommon for a team to be without its key players, especially in the group phase where teams of very different levels often clash.

It's also important to note whether a team has already qualified or has been eliminated, for example, as this could lead to a major turnaround.

Examine the head-to-head meetings between Copa Libertadores teams

It's not uncommon for teams from the same country to meet in this competition, or for teams from different countries to face each other over several consecutive seasons (or even for them to face each other in the group stage and end up in the knockout phase).

It is therefore always important to examine the history of direct confrontations, especially in the case of teams with a certain rivalry!

Finally, bear in mind that it's not uncommon to find different Copa Libertadores odds from one bookmaker to another! For example, you may find odds of 1.40 for a team to win, but at another bookmaker, the same bet is offered at 1.48.

If you choose the first option before comparing, you'll lose a lot of money over the long term. It is therefore highly advisable to consult several different bookmakers before deciding to ultimately submit your bet, as this will certainly add up over time!

These are the key points to bear in mind when making your Copa Libertadores 2025 predictions. Below, you'll find the rest of our page with the things to avoid in order to make the best possible bets.
