Belgian Pro League Presentation - Football
Take any top club in any football league in Europe and you will find a number of Belgian players forming the spine of these sides. The golden generation of Belgians are a treat to watch in world football and needless to say, that increases the interest in finding out what their top-flight football league is up to. The Belgian First Division league goes by the name Belgian Pro League (from the 2015/16 season) and is officially known as “Jupiler Pro League” for commercial reasons. The league has 16 teams competing in the regular season, followed by play-offs 1 (for the title) or play-off 2 (also known as the “Europa League play-off”).
Jupiler Pro League experts predictions
The competition had its roots back in 1895 and the first winner of the title was FC Liegeois. Of the 74 clubs that have competed in the league since its inception, 15 have been crowned champions. RSC Anderlecht is the most successful club with 34 titles, followed by Brugge KV (14).
Coming to the statistics, the Belgian Super League may go under the radar compared to the other lucrative leagues in Europe, but is one of the most entertaining leagues around. A quick look at the average goals per match for the last three seasons tells you how well the league is contested. In 2015/16 there were on an average 2.91 goals per match, while in 2016/17 the number was 2.74 goals per game. Last season saw 2.84 goals per match in the 270 matches that were played, which is on par with the more famous English Premier League.
In 77% of the matches played last season (208 out of 270), there have been over 1.5 goals scored – so that’s a pointer for you if you are looking at the “Over” goals market. Even the over 2.5 goals market saw 53% of the games ending in that bracket. A very high 32% of the matches ended with over 3.5 goals, that comes to around one every three games.
Another interesting aspect is that last season saw 43% of the matches won by the home side while 30% away sides picking up a win. The entire last season saw only 17 matches ending goalless, so you can expect the sides to be on the scoresheets with regular results. 766 goals were scored in 270 matches last season, of which 184 were scored in the last 15 minutes of the match (including stoppage time). That comes to a very high 24%, which played its part in a whopping 56% of goals scored in the second half of the matches last season.
With the league adopting two levels of play-offs, the interest for bettors is not just on the winners, but also on picking the play-off teams – for the title play-offs and the Europa League play-offs. Club Brugge and Anderlecht have been the standard names in the title race with the two teams between them, sharing 5 titles in the last 6 seasons. Both these sides have never moved out of top three in the last 6 seasons – which should be another pointer for you when you are backing teams in the betting market!
How to predict Belgian Pro League matches
It’s important to keep an eye on the form and performance of key players and the sides. Last season saw Club Brugge enjoy the prolific goal scoring form of their striker Abdoulay Diaby, who picked up 15 goals and 4 assists in 34 matches. Had he been injured ahead of some key matches, Brugge would have struggled to replace his goals although the Dutch midfielder Ruud Vormer chipped in with 9 goals in 34 matches. Iranian forward Kaveh Rezaei scored 16 goals for the unheralded Sporting Charleroi to take them to the title play-offs only to fall flat on the last hurdle. This year it could be some other side, but make sure you keep an eye on the form and goals of a top player to understand if you can back his side in the play-offs race.
Of course, it is also important to look at various sports betting sites and compare the odds before finalising your tips. For the same bet, different bookmakers may offer different odds. Have a look at what the different bookmakers are offering and then pick the best one to maximize your potential earnings. For example, on a victory for Genk over Anderlecht, Bet365 could offer odds of 5/2 as against 1/1 by William Hill. You know which to pick, if you made your homework on the various bookmakers!

Like we said earlier, you can look at picking teams that will qualify for the play-offs. Top sides like Anderlecht and Brugge have almost always remained in the title hunt by staying in the top-three of the league standings. So, that can be a starter for you in the “teams to reach the title play-offs” market. Considering the frequent number of goals scored in the matches, it is also pertinent to keep an eye on the “Over 1.5 goals” and “Over 3.5 goals” markets.
Betting tips on the Belgian Pro League top Scorer?
The league has seen a variety of top scorers and of them Erin Vandenbergh remains the only player to have claimed the top scorer title 4 consecutive times. Not until the 1966/67 season did we see a foreign player picking up this award, as the Dutchman Jan Mulder did so with Anderlecht. Since then, 24 foreign players in 51 years (a hit rate of 47%) have won the top scorer title. The 2017/18 season saw Teddy Chevalier (France) of Kortrijk tie with Isaac Thelin (Sweden) of Waasland-Beveren with 16 goals each, in the race to the top striker honours.
