The league phase of the 2026-27 UEFA Europa League continues with matchday two, as seventh-place Benfica host 28th-placed Celtic at the Estádio da Luz. The Eagles’ games have been goal-filled under Marco Silva, while the Hoops have conceded eight in their last two European fixtures, which has us backing goals at both ends in our prediction.
Two-time European Cup winners Benfica are still chasing a first title in this competition, having been runners-up in 1983, 2013 and 2014. They last played in it in 2023-24, going out to Marseille on penalties in the quarter-finals, but opened this campaign with a historic win over AC Milan and can make it six points from six.
Celtic are also looking to lift this trophy for the first time, having lost the 2003 final (back when it was still the UEFA Cup) to José Mourinho’s Porto. Martin O’Neill, coincidentally, was also the manager of Celtic on that day more than 20 years ago, as he is now. The Scottish champions have reached the knockout play-offs in both league-phase seasons so far, only to fall at the first hurdle to Bayern and Stuttgart, and they have not won a European knockout tie since 2004.

Benfica Lisbon - Celtic: Form Analysis
It’s been a strong start to the new campaign for Benfica, who have posted a 6-1-1 record in the Portuguese top flight. Unfortunately for them, defending champions FC Porto have started a perfect eight for eight, which leaves the Eagles trailing by five points.
They also kicked off their Europa League campaign in emphatic fashion with a 2-0 away win over AC Milan in the San Siro.
Benfica’s victory over AC Milan in matchday one was the first ever in club history in seven total meetings.
When including their qualifying campaign, Benfica have lost only twice this season in 15 competitive outings, winning 11. They also come into this matchup on a run of nine wins from their last 10 fixtures and an unbeaten 6-1-0 home record this season.
Celtic, meanwhile, have also started strongly in their domestic league as they sit atop the Scottish Premiership with seven wins from eight games. However, there have been some worrying away performances for the Bhoys in big games.
The Hoops were beaten 5-1 away by LASK in UCL qualification and also beaten 3-0 away by Rangers in the League Cup. Their UEL league stage opener didn’t go to plan, as they lost 3-1 on home soil to Ferencvaros.

Benfica Lisbon & Celtic Squad Analysis
Jakub Kaminski, who scored a goal and provided an assist in the team’s 2-0 away win over Milan, is unavailable after picking up an injury with Poland during the international break. The only other injury concern for the hosts is defensive midfielder Enzo Barrenechea.
Pavlidis has been a roaring success in Lisbon since making the switch over from AZ Alkmaar in 2024. He scored 31 goals in 57 appearances across all competitions last season and has started off the 2026-27 campaign with 14 goals from 14 appearances, while also chipping in with four assists.
The 27-year-old Greek international will be the main danger man that Celtic will have to keep close tabs on, but they also mustn’t lose track of Gianluca Prestianni, who has really taken his game to another level this season.
Prestianni carried over his red-hot club form to the international stage during the break.
He scored his first goal for Argentina and provided an assist in a MOTM display in a 7-0 rout of Burkina Faso.
For Celtic manager Martin O’Neill, he’ll be unable to call upon four players for the trip to Portugal, including Alistair Johnston, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Hyun-Jun Yang and Callum Osmand.
Benjamin Nygren and Kasper Waarts Hogh are the two standout attackers for the visitors. Nygren provided 30 goal contributions across all competitions in his debut season for the Scottish champions last year, and has already chipped in six goals and six assists in the current campaign.

Our Benfica Lisbon vs Celtic Prediction
Benfica have the quality to make life difficult for a Celtic side that has looked vulnerable in big matches this season. Marco Silva has this team purring on the attacking end, with 24 goals in eight Liga Portugal matches and two on the road in their opening UEL match.
The Bhoys, meanwhile, are far from toothless in attack. They've created 41 big chances in eight league matches, albeit in the Scottish Premiership, but given Benfica's defensive record (only two clean sheets in seven home matches), we think Celtic can get on the scoresheet. Our Benfica vs Celtic prediction: BTTS + over 2.5.
