A-League 2025-26 Predictions & Betting tips
A-League 2025-26 Presentation and Predictions
Established in 2004, the A-League is Australia’s premier football competition and has quickly grown to become one of the most exciting leagues in the Asia-Pacific region. As of 2025-26 the league is composed of 12 teams (10 from Australia and 2 from New Zealand), which is down from last year’s number of 13 following Western United’s withdrawal for financial reasons. However, an appeal is in place, so last season’s semi-finalists may still have a future in the A-League. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on this situation, so check back frequently!
The league operates on a standard round-robin format, though the key difference is that there is no promotion or relegation as there is in most European football leagues. The A-League campaign typically spans from October to May, featuring a 24-round regular season. This is followed by a Final Series in which the top six teams compete, leading to a Grand Final. The team that finishes first in the regular season is called the ‘Premier’, while the victor of the Grand Final is crowned the season’s Champion. Melbourne City are the defending champions after defeating local rivals Melbourne Victory in the Grand Final.

Outright prediction: who will win the 2025-26 A-League title?
It was a Melbourne derby to determine the champions last season with Melbourne City coming out on top with a 1-0 win. It was the team’s second ever title and has cemented them as one of the league’s top teams, thus marking a rapid rise to the top of Australian football following the club’s purchase and rebranding by the City Football Group in 2014.
Auckland FC was one of the feel-good stories of the season with the club being named Premiers in their first ever appearance in the A-League. They’ll be gunning for the championship this time around, but will they be able to get there?
Our experts believe so. Auckland FC have arguably the most talented squad in the division and will be coming into the 2025-26 with a huge amount of momentum after their Cinderella run last year. The experience is sure to serve them well in the upcoming season and they should be considered top contenders to be named both Premiers and Champions.

Top goalscorer prediction in the 2025-26 A-League
The A-League was plundered this summer, seeing the top six highest goalscorers in the 2024-25 season all leave abroad for pastures anew. That means that the golden boot race is wide open this year!
Adam Taggart should be in the mix as the focal point of the Perth Glory attack. The 32-year-old saw his production dip a bit last year, scoring 10 goals in 25 appearances. Prior to that, Taggart has scored 20 goals in 25 league fixtures in 2023-24, winning top scorer honours for that season.
Now with a season under his belt to get used to the A-League, Auckland’s Guillermo May could be primed for a big year. He scored nine goals last season but is playing for one of the league’s best sides and should have plenty of opportunities to put the ball in the net.
Check out a list of players that could content for the title of A-League top goalscorer:
- Kosta Barbarouses (Western Sydney)
- Guillermo May (Auckland FC)
- Joe Lolley (Sydney FC)
- Hiroshi Ibusuki (Western United)
- Adam Taggart (Perth Glory)
- Bruno Fornaroli (Melbourne Victory)
- Douglas Costa (Sydney FC)
- Sam Cosgrove (Auckland FC)
- Brandon Borello (Western Sydney)
- Nikolaos Vergos (Melbourne Victory)
A-League Top 6 Prediction: which teams will qualify for the final series?
At the end of the regular season, the top six teams in the league standings advance to the Finals Series. Teams are ranked based on the total points earned throughout the regular season and if two or more teams are tied on points, a pre-determined set of tiebreakers will be implemented to decide the winner.
The Finals Series lasts for four weeks. In the first week, the teams ranked third to sixth face off in single-elimination matches, with the winner of these games moving on to join the first and second-ranked teams in two-legged ties which will take place over the following two weeks. The victors of these ties advance to the Grand Final.
Notably, A-League clubs are eligible to qualify for both the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two tournaments. However, Auckland FC and Wellington Phoenix are excluded from the AFC competitions, as they are based in New Zealand, which is part of the Oceania Football Confederation. As mentioned, teams in the A-League cannot be relegated from the division.

Beginners Guide to how the A-League works
The A-League has undergone significant expansion since its establishment in 2004 when only eight teams were included in the competition. Of the initial eight teams, only the New Zealand Knights have failed to survive to the current season, folding after the 2006-07 campaign.
The expansion of the A-League is an ongoing process and it has now grown to include clubs from both Australia and New Zealand. In the current 2025-26 season, 12 teams are competing in the league, although Western United could be reinstated if their appeal is successful.
The regular A-League season consists of a 24-match home and away schedule for each club, with two byes, plus two additional rounds (including the Unite Rounds), totalling 26 matches. At the end of the regular season, the top six teams in the league standings advance to the Finals Series.
Two trophies are up for grabs in the A-League: the Premier’s Plate and the A-League Trophy. The Premier’s Plate is given to the team that finishes first in the regular season, while the A-League Trophy is awarded to the A-League Champions - the team that wins the Grand Final in the Finals Series.
Here is a quick overview of the format:
- Each team will play 24 home and away games, plus two additional matches.
- The team that finished at the top of the league table is crowned A-League Premiers
- The top six teams in the standings advance to the Finals Series
- The winner of the Grand Finals is crowned A-League Champions
- There is no promotion or relegation
The top two teams in the standings (Australian teams only) qualify for the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two competitions. Teams from New Zealand are excluded from these competitions as they fall under the Oceania Football Confederation.
Tips for making accurate A-League predictions
Given the competitive and ever-expanding nature of the A-League, placing consistent successful bets can become challenging. Here are a few factors to consider in your A-League betting decisions.
- Pay attention to the fixture schedule
- Favour teams playing at home
- Stay updated with player availability
- Make use of reliable statistics
As we mentioned earlier in this article, the A-League is one of the most competitive around, with eight teams winning the title in the last 20 years. Additionally, newcomers like Auckland FC have made a splash since joining the league and have been very profitable for their backers, having already caused several upsets en route to the lead in the league standings.
Thus, a team’s position in the league table may not accurately reflect how they will perform in a given match, especially when considering that this season, the top eight sides in the standings are separated by just 12 points after 15 games.
Pay attention to the fixture schedule
As is the case in most leagues across the globe, fixture schedules can have a significant impact on a team’s performance. For example, Central Coast Mariners FC and Sydney FC are participating in the AFC Champions League Elite and AFC Champions League Two respectively.
Given the distance between Australia and most teams across the AFC region, A-League sides that are competing in AFC competitions have to travel long distances for matches, and often fatigue can play a huge factor in their performances, especially when games are scheduled in quick succession.
Favour teams playing at home
Similar to most other football leagues, teams playing at home have a significant advantage due to their familiarity with their home ground. Over the last five seasons, teams playing at home have accounted for 46% of wins in a season.
Notably, this season (2024-25) is a little different, with home sides winning 31% of games to date while teams on the road have won 45% of matches. However, over the recent history of the A-League, home teams have almost doubled the amount of wins as away sides.
Stay updated with player availability
Staying up to date with player availability is crucial for making informed betting decisions, as injuries, suspensions and last-minute changes in the lineup can have a significant impact on the team’s performance and the odds offered by bookmakers.
Monitoring official club announcements, injury reports, and news from reliable sources helps bettors assess the potential effect on a match’s outcome. It’s also important to track players’ recent form and any tactical shifts in the team, as these factors can influence the chances of key players being involved or underperforming.
Make use of reliable statistics
Utilising reliable statistics is essential for successful betting, as it provides a data-driven foundation for predicting outcomes. Key stats like a team’s win-loss records, goals scored, possession percentages and head-to-head results can offer valuable insights into a team’s form and performance trends.
Diving deeper into player stats, including goal involvements and defensive records can also help gauge potential individual contributions and weaknesses (player prop bets). Relying on trustworthy, up-to-date stats - like those you will find at SportyTrader - ensures a more calculated approach, reducing the reliance on guesswork and blind luck.
What not to do for your A-League predictions
While using the tips above to help your betting decisions are important, it is equally imperative to avoid certain pitfalls that can lead to losses. Here’s a list of things to avoid when making your A-League predictions:
- Relying on gut feeling or luck
- Ignoring team news
- Overlooking head-to-head records
- Chasing losses
- Disregarding home and away form
- Being swayed by public opinion
- Betting without bankroll management
These mistakes may seem basic, but they are often the primary reasons many punters struggle to place consistent winning bets. Make sure you’re not falling into these traps by steering clear of them at all costs.
