CAF Confederation Cup  2023-24 presentation and predictions

CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24

At SportyTrader, we're thrilled to be your trusted companion as we embark on the exhilarating journey that is the CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24.

Originating in 2004, when CAF merged the African Cup Winners' Cup with the CAF Cup, the CAF Confederation Cup has become the stage where clubs from across Africa vie for supremacy. While it may not always gain the same recognition as its bigger brother, the CAF Champions League, the Confederation Cup is more than just a tournament; it's a stage where underdogs can become African giants, earning itself the nickname the ‘Gateway to Glory’.

Algerian Ligue Professionelle 1 side USM Alger earned their first-ever title at the first attempt last season and have made a very positive start to their title defense. In terms of past winners, names like TP Mazembe, ES Sahel, and Raja Casablanca resonate as titans of the tournament. However, CS Sfaxien stands as the most successful team in CAF Confederation Cup history, lifting the coveted trophy on three occasions, including back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008, as well as in 2013.

Will we see a past winner claim the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup, or will we see an underdog rise to the summit? Check out our thoughts below!

CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 title prediction: who will win the 2023-2024 CAF Confederation Cup Cup?

CAF Confederation Cup winner

Historically, the likes of Orlando Pirates, CS Sfaxien, and Raja Casablanca have often gone deep in this competition. However, the beauty of the CAF Confederation Cup lies in the potential for underdogs to rise and claim the spotlight, as we saw last season when USM Alger defied the odds to beat Young Africans on away goals in an exhilarating final at the Stade du 5 Juillet.

The defending champions have already had a strong campaign as they have made it to the final four teams, but retaining their crown will be no easy feat. Only two teams in the history of the CAF Confederation Cup have managed to successfully defend the title in the following season (Mazembe and CS Sfaxien). Zamalek, Dreams and RSB Berkane make up the rest of the semi-final participants. Egyptian club Zamalek, who are five-time winners of the CAF Champions League, are deserved favorites to lift the Confederation Cup with their pedigree in international competitions and will present a massive obstacle for USM Alger in their attempt at repeating as champions. Moroccan side RSB Berkane have had an impressive campaign so far and look to be another huge threat to win the title. Both Berkane and Zamalek have yet to lose a match in this competition and very well could make up the two teams that advance to the final.

While the landscape could change significantly between now and the start of the final (which is a two-legged fixture), we're going to stick with our initial CAF Confederation Cup prediction of: a double chance of victory for Zamalek or RSB Berkane!

What prediction for the top scorer in the CAF Conderation Cup 2023-24?

Unlike in the CAF Champions League, very few teams have dominated the top-scorer charts on a consistent basis. Since 2020, we have seen players from TP Mazembe, Amazulu and Pyramids all rise to the top of the list. This season is already shaping up to be a titanic battle, though the likes of Egyptian striker Zizo, Senegal’s Paul Bassene and Ghanaian John Antwi are expected to rival leader Bassem Srarfi as the competition progresses.

As it stands ahead of the semi-final, there is a four-way tie for the golden boot between Dreams' duo John Antwi and Aziz Issah (four goals in seven games each), USM Alger's Abdoulaye Kanou (four goals in seven matches), and RSB Berkane's Paul Bassene (four goals in three matches). Considering the current standings, Zamalek striker Zizo, with three goals in six matches, could present decent value to steal the golden boot in the final few matches. His team are the favorites to win the competition, meaning the probability of seeing the maximum amount of potential games is quite high, and is in fine form. He's one of the best players in this competition and has a strong overall return of 10 goals in 18 matches overall this season.

Our prediction for the CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 groups

As we approach the knockout stages, predicting match winners becomes increasingly challenging. However, the group stages offer a relatively more predictable landscape, which allows bettors to lock in a few wins early in the competition when there are several mismatches scheduled. Below, you'll find predictions from SportyTrader's African football experts to guide you through the exciting journey of the tournament.

Group A | USM Alger - Modern Future - Al Hilal Benghazi - Supersport United

CAF CC Group A prediction

Group A presents an intriguing mix of teams from diverse football backgrounds and contrasting styles of play. USM Alger, who announced themselves on the continental stage last season, are already in control of the group and are well on their way to defending their title. The Egyptian Premier League is one of the highest-rated in Africa, which means that Modern Future have to be given a good chance of making it to the end.

Al Hilal Benghazi, with their experience, brings a touch of seasoned resilience to the group, while 2017 champions Supersport United, representing South Africa, contribute a dynamic flair to the mix.

Our prediction for Group A: USM Alger and Modern Future to qualify.

Group B | Zamalek - Abu Salem - Sagrada Esperanca - CO Coyah

CAF CC Group B prediction

In Group B, Zamalek, a perennial contender in this competition and the Champions Cup, stand out as a formidable force with a strong pedigree in continental competitions. Their experience and depth make them frontrunners for the top spot in Group B, and they have already taken the lead in the group at the midway stage with a perfect record.

Abu Salem, however, might present a challenge, bringing a sense of unpredictability to the group. The Libyan Premier League team have made a positive start to the tournament and will be looking to reach the knockout stages for the first time. Sagrada Esperanca, and CO Coyah are underdogs in the group.

Our prediction for Group B: Zamalek and Abu Salem to qualify.

Group C | Dreams - Club Africain - Rivers United - Academica do Lobito

CAF CC Group C prediction

Aptly named, Dreams have made a dream start to the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup and find themselves in pole position in Group C at the midway stage. However, this is shaping up to be the group of death in this competition, with three teams all tied on six points apiece as it stands.

Seasoned contenders Club Africain will look to draw on their historical success in African competitions in their pursuit of qualification. Watch for how the Tunisian Ligue Professionelle 1 side leverage their continental know-how and secure a commanding position in the group. NPLF representatives Rivers are also in the mix for a knockout spot and have already shown they are well capable of upsetting some of the more fancied teams in the competition, while  Academica do Lobito have it all to do to progress.

Our prediction for Group C: Club Africain and Dream to qualify. Watch out for Rivers United, who may cause a few big upsets before we close the curtain on this group.

Group D | RSB Berkane - Stade Malien - Sekhukhune United - ADiables Noirs

CAF CC Group D prediction

RSB Berkane are the standout force in Group D, given their recent success and consistent strong performances in continental cup competition. The Moroccan Botola Pro 1 side have lifted this trophy on two occasions, most recently when they beat Orlando Pirates in a nail-biting penalty shootout at The Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Nigeria. The Oranges Boys are in a commanding position already, and we should see them in the knockout stages.

The 2009 CAF Confederation Cup winners Stade Malien are expected to claim second place in the group, though PSL’s Sekhukhune United’s unique and energetic style of ‘Kasi Flava’ sees them currently sat level on points with the side from Mali. Diables Noirs will struggle to get out of this group.

Our prediction for Group D: RSB Berkane and Stade Malien to qualify. A couple of big matches are to come in this group, so keep an eye on the live odds.

Beginners Guide to how the CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 works

CAF CC Prediction guide

Wondering what the journey to CAF Confederation Cup glory entails? Here’s a quick breakdown of the entire competition from start to end.

  • Qualification: Let the games begin! Teams qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup based on their performance in their respective domestic leagues. Associations ranked higher up the ladder will be allowed more entries to the competition and will be required to participate in fewer qualification rounds. Reaching the group stages includes playing one or two qualifying matches (depending on ranking). A total of 52 teams enter the qualifying rounds but only 16 reach the group stage.
  • Group Stage: During the group stages, the qualifying teams are drawn into groups, each consisting of four teams. Group stage matches are played on a home-and-away basis. Points are awarded for wins and draws, and the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stages. The points system works the same as it does in any league or cup competition.
  • Knockout Stages: The top eight sides in the group stages contest the knockout stages, which include the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final. Matches in these stages are also played on a home-and-away basis. The team with the higher aggregate score over the two legs advances to the next round.
  • Final: The two surviving teams from the semi-finals face off in the Grand Final to determine the winner of the 2023-24 CAF Confederation Cup. The final is scheduled for May 17-19, 2024.

How to make good predictions on CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 matches?

Successfully predicting match outcomes in the CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 involves a careful analysis of various factors that influence football dynamics. Here are SportyTrader’s key strategies to enhance your prediction game:

  • Review Head-to-Head Records
  • Analyse Home and Away Trends
  • Assess Team Form
  • Stay Updated on Key Player News
  • Only Use Reliable Information

Strategy 1: Review Head-to-Head Records

CAF CC Betting tips 1

One of the most well-known strategies, head-to-head (h2h) records provide an abundance of important information that can help guide your betting decisions. H2h records reveal patterns, strengths, and weaknesses, such as a team’s historical advantage over another. Be sure also to consider the association rankings of each club, as higher-ranking teams often have greater financial resources, which allows them to attract the best players from across their borders. If there are no head-to-head records between the sides you are looking at, search for teams that they have faced from the same country for a better understanding of their chances in the contest.

Example: If Zamalek have never faced Supersport United but have a strong record against other Premier Soccer League sides, then it could stand to reason that they may fare well against other South African sides such as Sekhukune United.

Strategy 2: Analyse Home and Away Trends

Another essential strategy is to sift through the performances of a team on their home ground versus their performances away from home. There is no denying that playing at home tends to be a considerable advantage as teams are more familiar with the conditions and have the support of their fans behind them. However, some teams may have a historical record of performing well at specific venues, which can lead to upsets.

Example: Stade Malien may not have won an away match in the competition as yet, but they have beaten all comers when playing in Mali. Therefore, even if they beat Daibles Noirs at home, for example, that does not necessarily mean they will be favourites to win the away fixture as well.

Strategy 3: Assess Team Form

CAF CC Betting tips 2

The sustained level of performance a team delivers serves as a pivotal gauge for a team's present capability and competitiveness at an elevated standard.  Dedicate time to assess the recent performances of teams in their respective domestic leagues and past fixtures in the CAF competitions. Keep an eye out for teams that are on a run of good results or are protecting an unbeaten record.

Example: If RSB Berkane have secured victories in its most recent five matches in both the domestic league and the Conference Cup, it indicates a noteworthy degree of confidence and form within the side. This information frequently plays a decisive role in figuring out how a team will fare in their upcoming match.

Strategy 4: Stay Updated on Key Player News

Imagine Manchester City without Erling Haaland or Real Madrid without Jude Bellingham. Safe to say, they are not the same team without these key players, and the same goes for teams in the CAF Confederation Cup. Monitor team news for information on player injuries and suspensions. The absence of key players can significantly impact a team's performance.

Example: If a team’s most influential player is suspended or likely to miss the net match due to injury or illness, his absence from the squad could impact the overall performance of the team and the end result.

Strategy 5: Only Use Reliable Information

CAF CC Betting tips 3

While there are plenty of platforms to access data for the CAF Confederation Cup, the importance of relying on accurate and credible information cannot be overstated. Before incorporating any information into your analysis, verify the source's credibility. Ensure that the data comes from reputable sports news outlets, official team statements, or recognised statistical databases. This is where SportyTrader stands out from the crowd, as our African football experts leave no stone unturned in their analysis and predictions. The same can be said about bookmakers, so be sure to use more than one source wherever possible.

CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 : Frequently Asked Questions

The CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 kicked off with the first qualifying round on August 18, 2023. The group stages will run from November 26, 2023, to March 2, 2024. The Grand Final will take place over two legs on May 10, 2024, and May 17, 2024.

CS Sfaxien has won the CAF Confederation Cup the most with three wins under their belts. They are followed by ES Sahel, TP Mazembe, RS Berkane and Raja Casablanca with two titles each.

The grouping is typically based on a draw conducted by CAF. Teams are drawn into different pots according to their ranking, and once placed in groups via the draw, they compete against each other in a round-robin format during the group stage.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) employs the CAF 5-year ranking system to decide the allocation of slots for club football competitions, namely the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. Currently, the top 12 ranked associations are granted the privilege of entering two teams into each of these competitions. Conversely, the remaining associations are restricted to a single team in each competition, ensuring a balance in representation based on the rankings.

In the event of tied ranking points, the team with more points from the previous season will be considered higher-ranked. This mechanism ensures a fair and competitive seeding process for the two CAF club competitions.

CAF Confederation Cup matches are broadcast on various sports networks and streaming platforms. In most countries across Africa, the tournament can be viewed on DSTV or DSTV Now.

If you cannot watch the matches on TV, SportyTrader will be covering every match of the CAF Confederation Cup 2023-24 on our CAF Confederation Cup Livescore page.
