Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime is back in Gstaad for a second time. His return in 2024 ends a six-year hiatus from the competition. It also sees him get back to clay after a disappointing grass season in which he failed to win a match.
The Canadian has had his best moments this year on clay. He has 12 wins in 17 matches on the surface. This form resulted in a runner-up finish in Madrid and a run to the fourth round at Roland Garros. The former world number six is currently placed 18th in the ATP.
Yannick Hanfmann defeated lucky loser Nicolas Moreno in a grueling three-setter in the first round. That match lasted two hours and 36 minutes and saw the first two sets require a tiebreaker. Hanfmann, a former Gstaad finalist, had lost three successive matches before arriving in Switzerland.
The German is having a torrid campaign and has lost 23 matches which is nine more defeats than the 14 he has won. However, as he is a strong clay player, having won 200 matches on the surface in his career, he will fancy his chances.
Hanfmann has dropped two places to 113th in the live ranking despite his first-round victory. This will be these players’ first career meeting and the winner will play either Daniel Elahi Galan or Matteo Berrettini in the quarter-finals.
