Andorran side Santa Coloma’s Champions League journey could come to an end on Wednesday when they visit Danish giants Midtjylland. The hosts lead 3-0 from the opening leg of their 2nd qualifying round tie. Here’s our preview of their coming match and a prediction.
From the outset this was a lopsided pairing, with Midtjylland clearly the favorites. They didn’t disappoint in the first leg away from home as they took a solid lead. Coming into the return leg, they don’t seem to be in danger of elimination and should already be planning for the third round.
As they’ve struggled in recent domestic matches, the Danes will hope this game builds up their confidence. Midtjylland are unbeaten in eight matches but half of them ended in draws. Heading into this game, 10 of Midtjylland’s last 11 matches had over 2.5 goals scored.
Santa Coloma’s debut in the Champions League hasn’t gone to plan. As they go into their fourth match in the competition, there’s really no chance of them progressing, having lost at home to a superior opponent.
In the first qualifying round, they had to see off Ballkani through post-match penalties after losing the home leg. The visitors will hope to repeat the same here though Midtjylland is a way stronger opponent.
It doesn’t help Santa Coloma that their domestic season is yet to start, and they showed a shortage in fitness against Midtjylland. While this is Santa Coloma’s first taste of the Champions League, they aren’t entirely new in the European terrain. They featured in the preliminary rounds of the Europa League in 2017 and the Conference League in 2022 and lost all matches.
