The Exeter Chiefs will play host to the Newcastle Falcons in week 13 of the Gallagher Premiership on Saturday afternoon. The hosts are in fifth place in the league standings, while the visitors are bottom of the table. Despite the departure of several club stalwarts, the youngsters at Chiefs have stepped up impressively this season and are on track to challenge for a semi-final spot. Currently sitting in fifth place, just one point behind Saracens in fourth, they are in a strong position. However, Exeter have been in a bit of a slump since the New Year as they come into this match off the back of three consecutive defeats across all competitions. They were beaten by Gloucester in the semi-final of the Premiership Rugby Cup last month and went down to Saracents 40-22 in this competition back in January. Still, facing a Falcons side that has yet to secure a victory in all 12 of their outings, this will feel like the perfect fixture for the Chiefs to get back to winning ways.
Meanwhile, Newcastle is a team facing resource challenges, and while their current campaign has been disappointing, they will take lots of experience away from it as they look ahead to the 2024-25 campaign. The Falcons have not won a single game in this competition and have only managed a meager four bonus points to date while holding a points difference of -220. It has been a similar situation for the Falcons elsewhere as well, as they ended second-bottom of their group in the EPCR Challenge Cup, managing just one win in their four games, which was a dead-rubber victory over Perpignan at the start of the year. Having failed to win a single Premiership match so far, it's difficult to imagine the away side putting up much of a fight here, especially considering the Chiefs' formidable record at home.
