Fifth seed Jessica Pegula will take on 14th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. Alexandrova is coming off the biggest win of her career. The Russian produced a shock straight sets victory over top seed Iga Swiatek to advance to this round. It was her first-ever win against a world-number-one ranked player. She allowed Swiatek six games as she confirmed a second successive quarterfinal appearance in Miami. Alexandrova has been in good form this year and has won 11 of 18 matches. She was a finalist in Linz and a semifinalist in Adelaide. In Adelaide, she defeated Elena Rybakina, another top-five-ranked player. She should therefore not be faced by coming up against Pegula. The 29-year-old is ranked 16th in the WTA and will move up one place with a win here.

Jessica Pegula has made the semi-finals in each of her last two appearances in Miami. Having defeated Alexandrova in their only other encounter, the American will be confident of success here. Pegula defeated Alexandrova three seasons ago on her way to the quarterfinals in Rome. The current world number five is the second top-ranked player left in Miami. Seeing the main favourites knocked off early should have Pegula fancying her chances of winning it all even more. The two-time WTA 1000 level champion defeated Emma Navarro in straight sets in the fourth round. Pegula has yet to relinquish a set in the three rounds she has played in Miami. She has compiled a 9-4 record thus far this season and was a semifinalist in Adelaide and San Diego. The winner from this game will play either Danielle Collins or Caroline Garcia for a place in the final.
