Recent Marrakech finalist Roberto Carballes Baena will hope for a good run in the Madrid Masters. The Spaniard is at 64th in the live rankings and takes on Dominick Koepfer in round one of this outdoor clay court tournament. For the winner there's a second round match against the 17th-seeded Alexander Bublik. Baena has spent most of his year playing clay court tournaments as he traveled to South America for their tour. That didnt go too well with only one match won in the four tournaments he played. He's shown much better form in recent weeks though. Last year saw him win the Marrakech tournament and he nearly retained it last month. He made it to the final but was beaten by Matteo Berrettini. Last week saw him get to the third round in Barcelona, losing to eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas.  

Dominik Koepfer is 52nd in the live list but hasn't made a good start on clay this year. He didn't play in South America unlike his opponent but has played three clay court tournaments in Europe. Unfortunately, he's still waiting for his first win. He's lost his first match in Estoril, Monte Carlo and last week's Munich event. Only one set has been won by him in those three matches. He's been unable to repeat the form he's shown on hard courts earlier in the year. He had success on clay last year but mainly on the Challenger Tour. We go for Baena to win this match.
