Yuliia Starodubtseva defeated the unseeded Suzan Lamens in three sets in the first round. This was her third successive victory adding to the two wins in the qualifying rounds. The Ukrainian is now seeking to claim two wins at a tour event for the first time in her career.
She won her first match at a tour tournament at Wimbledon and did so as a qualifier. Advancing to this round has allowed her to move up to 120th in the live ranking which is a new career high.
Starodubtseva, who has featured mainly in the ITF circuit, has won 32 of the 50 matches she played this season. This is the two players’ first career meeting and the winner will play Mai Hontama or Sonay Kartal in the quarter-finals.
