Wildcard Dennis Shapovalov will hope to continue his dominance over 12th seed Miomir Kecmanovic in their Thursday meeting in Washington. The two will square off in the third round, the winner advancing to face Brandon Nakashima, Radu Albot or Ben Shelton in the quarter-finals. This will be the fifth career meeting between the two and here’s our preview and prediction for the match.
Shapovalov has won both his matches on his return to DC in straight sets. The Canadian began with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Roberto Bautista Agut and then lost just three games against sixth seed Adrian Mannarino. He has now equalled his best-ever finish here in his fourth appearance.
Shapovalov had an injury-riddled season in 2023 and his form has taken a hit since. He is still on a losing record despite his wins in DC. The former ATP top 10 player is now up to 117th in the live ranking.
Miomir Kecmanovic has also struggled with his form this season and has so far lost more matches than he won. The Serb, who is playing in Washington for the third time, has compiled an 18-20 record.
A majority of his wins, precisely eight, have come on hard courts but so have nine of his defeats. To progress to this round, the 24-year-old defeated American J.J. Wolf in straight sets. He has now moved up one place in the live ranking after earning 40 ranking points and is placed 50th.
Kecmanovic has never won against Shapovalov. He has lost all four meetings with the Canadian, three of them being on hard courts. Their most recent encounter was last season in Acapulco.
