Denis Shapovalov is up against Adrian Mannarino in round one of the outdoor hard court Cincinnati Open. Shapovalov reached the Los Cabos final last month, while Mannarino is struggling for wins. Our prediction is therefore a victory for Shapovalov.

Whoever wins will take on 12th seed Rafael Jodar in round two of this Masters tournament.

Shapovalov won four matches in Los Cabos to reach the final, only to lose to Arthur Gea in straight sets. Since then, he was beaten in round one in Montreal when having to retire when 3-0 down in the deciding set against Zachary Svajda.

He leads Mannarino 2-1 in previous meetings and has won both of the matches played on this surface,

Shapovalov was 43rd in the last rankings, four places above his opponent.

Adrian Mannarino will not have fond memories of his last match against Shapovalov. That was on this surface in Washington two years ago and he only won three games. Two previous meetings had gone to a deciding set.

He comes into this tournament having lost his last two outdoor hard court matches. There was a good win over Learner Tien in Washington, but he's since lost to both Alex Michelsen and Jacob Fearnley
