A second round match against sixth seed Ben Shelton awaits the winner of this first round tie. David Goffin takes on Alexandre Muller in their opening match in the Shanghai Masters. Here's our match prediction.

David Goffin hasn't got good memories of his only previous match against Muller. They met earlier this year and it was one-set all when Goffin retired. That was played on clay though and this is an outdoor hard court match.

Only eight of Goffin's 22 hard court matches have been won this year. He won two in Beijing last week, including beating Arthur Rinderknech in the final qualifying round. The Frenchman was reinstated as a lucky loser and then beat Goffin in round one of the main draw.

The Belgian has suffered 13 first round defeats this year including seven of his last eight on hard courts.

Alexandre Muller has a 12-11 record on this surface in 2025. He's 38th in the live rankings, nearly 50 places above his opponent. Muller had a big win over Karen Khachanov in Beijing towards the end of September. 

Not since May has he won two successive matches in an ATP Tour event but that was on clay. At the start of this year he won the Hong Kong hard court title. We tip him to beat Goffin in this match.
