Third seeded Daniil Medvedev bids to reach the semi-finals of the Adelaide International. The world number seven takes on eighth seeded Karen Khachanov with a possible semi-final opponent being top seeded Novak Djokovic. Medvedev was top of the rankings in August of last year but has slipped down the list after failing to successfully defend his US Open title. The Russian won a title in Vienna last October but had a disappointing end to 2022 when losing all three of his matches in the ATP Tour Finals tournament. He reached five finals last year, including the Australian Open. The first three of those finals were lost but he's won the last two. He's won two matches to get to the Adelaide International quarter finals and is yet to drop a set. In the first round he had to go to a tie-break to win the first set against Lorenzo Sonego but his opponent retired when 2-1 down in the second set. Round two saw him defeat Miomir Kecmanovic for the loss of just three games.

Karen Khachanov is the world number 20 and rose nine places during 2022. He was as high as 18th in October after his run to the last four of the US Open. He didn't build on that in the final months of the year and failed to get past the last 16 in his last three tournaments. Khachanov has fond memories of this tournament as he reached the final last year, losing to Gael Monfils, though the highest ranked player he beat was Marin Cilic who was 30th in the world at that time. Khachanov has had wins over Pedro Cachin and Jack Draper, losing six games in each round. Medvedev leads 2-1 in previous meetings though their last match was three years ago.
