The last 16 of the US Open sees seventh seed Daniil Medvedev face 11th-seeded Frances Tiafoe. Seven previous matches between these two players have been dominated by Medvedev. He leads Tiafoe 6-1 and our prediction is that the Russian can get another victory.
In the quarter-finals, the winner will be up against either 27th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry or unseeded Alex Michelsen.
Daniil Medvedev won this outdoor hard court Grand Slam five years ago and has reached two other finals. Last year saw him lose in round one, but it's gone much better in 2026. Medvedev has had wins over Hugo Gaston, Sebastian Gorzny and 26th seed Arthur Rinderknech without losing a set.
A win will take him into his first Grand Slam quarter-final since this tournament two years ago.
Frances Tiafoe's sole win over Medvedev came on an indoor hard court. All the other six matches were played on this surface and won by Medvedev, including a win here in 2020. Their last meeting was in January 206 with Medvedev winning for the loss of only five games.
Tiafoe has twice reached the semi-finals of this tournament.
He struggled in the first round and needed to win the fourth and fifth sets to defeat Martin Damm. He's since had straight sets victories over Rei Sakamoto and 22nd seed Valentin Vacherot.
