Seventh seed Elina Svitolina will face third seed Cori Gauff in the final of this year’s Italian Open. Their sixth career meeting is also their second fixture as a championship match. Gauff has faltered in three of her latest five finals, and as such, our prediction sways towards Svitolina, a four-time WTA 1000 champion.
Gauff will contest the final in Rome for a second successive season. The American lost in last year’s final, her first-ever championship match in this event, and will be keen to set things right.
Gauff, a three-time WTA 1000 champion, defeated 26th seed Sorana Cirstea in the semi-finals. Her eighth win in 10 outings on clay this term saw her improve to a 24-8 record and sent her to her second final of the year.
Gauff, the world number four, won the only other matchup with Svitolina as a tour final in Auckland two seasons ago.
