Second seed Hubert Hurkacz and the unseeded Cristian Garin will battle in the semifinals at the Estoril Open. The winner will then play either Casper Ruud or Pedro Martinez for the title. Cristian Garin defeated crowd favourite Nuno Borges in straight sets in the last round. The win allowed him to tie his record at 8-8. The Chilean has struggled to get going this season but has recorded the majority of his wins on clay. He is now through to his first tour semifinal in two seasons and it is no surprise that this has happened on clay. Garin, who has won over 300 matches on the surface in his career, has won five tour crowns on clay. Advancing to the last four has moved him closer to getting back to the ATP top 100 as he is now ranked 101 in the live ranking. Garin defeated Hurkacz in their only other encounter. This was on grass in the qualifying rounds at Wimbledon in 2018.
Hubert Hurkacz is having a far better campaign than Garin. He has compiled a 17-8 record and is now through to his second semifinal of the season. The Pole made the last four in Marseille and was also a quarterfinalist in Melbourne and Dubai. He is highly favoured to advance to the final. Hurkacz is having his best-ever campaign in Estoril and before this season, he had never gone past the second round. This run has nudged him up one place in the live ranking to ninth. The 27-year-old isn’t a dominant player on clay like Garin but hasn’t struggled on the surface. He has won both of his clay fixtures this season in straight sets. Hurkacz defeated the qualifier Pablo Llamas Ruiz in the quarterfinals by the loss of 10 games.
