The United States and China face off for the first time in the final of the FIBA Women’s World Cup with the gold medal on the line. This matchup is very much a case of the established old guard in the US women’s team taking on the emerging talent that is the Chinese women’s squad. For the USA, they are looking to win their fourth consecutive gold medal, sixth in the past seven World Cup iterations and 12th gold overall, highlighting just how dominant they have been over the years. Standing in their way is China who are making only their second finals appearance after finishing runners-up to the Australians in 1994. The US got past Canada with a historic 83-43 victory in the semis while China squeaked by hosts Australia with a 61-59 win.

A’ja Wilson will be expected to put up another big game as the Las Vegas Aces star leads the team in scoring this tournament with 16.8 points per game. However, what makes this USA team so impossible to guard is the depth they have at every position. Six players average in double figures on this squad with stars such as Kelsey Plum and Breanna Stewart the second and third leading scorers at 15.1 points per game and 13.3 points per game, respectively. For China, center Han Xu will have to have another monster game after her 19 point 11 rebound double-double to secure the semi final win over Australia. If the US can neutralize her inside presence that we will likely be looking at another easy win for the US women.

We are going to back the United States to get the win and cover the -23.5 point spread in the process. While the spread does look substantial upon first viewing, it’s important to understand the historic precedent that the American women are setting with their run. China are an excellent, up-and-coming team but they are still likely a few years away from being serious contenders. The US team is stacked in every position and have been absolutely obliterating everything in its path this tournament. The record 101 points per game is a good indication of what their intentions are in this World Cup.
