The Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad will face off in match 46 of the 2024 Indian Premier League at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. The hosts are fifth in the league standings, while the visitors are third. The Chennai Super Kings come into this match in need of a positive result. They slipped out of the playoff places last week after losing by six wickets and three balls to the Lucknow Super Giants, who leapfrogged them in the standings. That was CSK’s second defeat on the bounce to the same opponent. They are now on eight points in as many games, but a win here will see them break back into the top four owing to their +0.415 net run rate. Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 108*(60) against the Giants to move into second place in the orange cap standings, while Shivam Dube moved to eighth place, now on 311 runs in the competition. Matheesha Pathirana is on 11 wickets in the competition, two behind purple cap holder Jasprit Bumrah. The hosts lost to this opponent earlier in the competition but are the favourites at home in this one.
Meanwhile, the Sunrisers Hyderabad are enjoying a solid IPL campaign but come into this match following an against-the-odds defeat to bottom club Royal Challengers Bangalore in midweek. RCB posted 206/7, but SRH only managed 171/8 in response, ultimately losing the match by 35 runs. Shahbaz Ahmed scored 40*(37), and Jaydev Unadkat took 3/30 in the defeat. That result brought an end to a four-match winning streak, leaving them level with the Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants on ten points, four behind league leaders the Rajasthan Royals. Travis Head has been the main contributor with the bat this season for the Sunrisers, currently on 325 runs and in fifth place in the leading run-scorer standings. Thangarasu Natarajan leads the team with ball in hand, taking 12 wickets in 24 overs, including a best of 4/19. A win for SRH will put them in a very strong position to secure a playoff berth, but it is never an easy task to come away from Chennai with a win.
