The defending champions, the Gujarat Titans, will take on four-time champions, the Chennai Super Kings, in the grand final of the 2023 Indian Premier League. It’s a fitting end to what’s been an incredible tournament, with the sides that finished first and second in the group stages battling it out for the title at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The reigning champions had to take the long route to this stage after losing to this opponent in the first playoff match. However, they were a class above the Mumbai Indians in the eliminator on Friday, beating the five-time champions by 62 runs. Shubman Gill recorded the highest individual score in the tournament to date in that match, smashing 129 runs in just 60 balls at the top of the order. He has taken over the orange cap from long-time holder Faf du Plessis and will end the tournament as the top-run scorer. The top three places for the purple cap are occupied by GT bowlers. Mohammad Shami currently leads with 28 wickets, Rashid Khan has 27, and Mohit Sharma on 24. The pair are ranked fifth and seventh, respectively, in the orange cap standings and have scored over 1100 runs between them. Both have a high score in the tournament of 92. Matheesha Pathirana has caught the eye in his first IPL and has picked up 17 wickets in the tournament to date. The right-arm paceman’s Malinga-like action has proven difficult to pick by most batsmen, and his best figures in this tournament read as 3/15. CSK’s greatest strength this season has been the balance in their side, with every player contributing when some of the higher-profile players have failed to fire. They have the experience in their ranks, and they will need to call on all of their expertise to get them over the line in this one.
