Second seed Holger Rune and sixth seed Caper Ruud will renew their rivalry when they meet in the semis at Acapulco. Casper Ruud is on course to make it to two successive tour finals. Having dominated this fixture with Rune, he will be confident of progressing here. Ruud has defeated Rune in five out of the six times they have met. This is the first time they are playing each other however on a different surface other than clay. Ruud, who finished as runner-up right before arriving at the Mexican Open, defeated Ben Shelton in the quarterfinals. He won in three sets to register his 12th win in 14 outings. He has now moved right back into the ATP top 10 and is ranked ninth in the live ranking.

Holger Rune is also having an exceptional start to the year and has so far won 11 of 15 matches. Eight of his wins have come in 10 outings on hard courts. The Dane finished as runner-up in Brisbane in his first tournament of the season. This is his third semifinal this season and has equaled his best result here from last season. He has been in excellent form in his return to Acapulco and has won his three matches without dropping a set. The current world number seven defeated Dominik Koepfer in a hard-fought two-setter that saw each set require a tiebreaker. Rune’s only victory over Ruud came last season in this very round in Rome. It was their first and only semifinal showdown up until now. The winner in this encounter will next face either Jack Draper or Alex de Minaur in the championship match.
