Carlos Alcaraz has already had a big week as he defeated Jannik Sinner to win the China Open title. He begins his hard court Shanghai Masters campaign with a second round match against Juncheng Shang. Here's our match prediction.
That win in Beijing saw Alcaraz go back up to second in both the overall and ATP Race rankings. He's still a long way behind Sinner who tops both of the lists and looks sure to be world number one at the end of 2024.
The Spaniard has won four singles titles this year, two of them being on hard courts. The other victory on this surface was at Indian Wells and he came into this Masters event on a winning streak. Since his disappointing second round exit in the US Open, Alcaraz has won nine matches in a row.
Juncheng Shang was a career high 51st in the latest rankings. The first round of this tournament saw the Chinese player defeat wild card Coleman Wong in straight sets. That's taken him to a new career high of 46th and five places higher in the ATP Live Race.
Shang recently won the hard court tournament played in Chengdu but was beaten in his first match in Beijing last week. The semi-finals were also reached in Atlanta so he's an awkward opponent for Alcaraz.
There's been one previous match against the Spaniard and that didn't go well for Shang. He only won two games in their match at this year's Australian Open before he had to retire injured. We go for over 19.5 games to be played in this match.

Carlos Alcaraz plays Juncheng Shang in the second round of the Shanghai Masters. He had a tough final against Jannik Sinner earlier this week but will hopefully have recovered from that big win as he won the China Open.
He takes on Juncheng Shang who also won an ATP Tour title last month. He's had some other good results too and is up to a career high ranking at present. He can certainly make life difficult for Alcaraz in this match.
