Round of 16 action at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball World Championship continues on Monday with Bulgaria taking on Portugal. The winner of this match between Team Portugal and Team Bulgaria will face either the United States or Slovenia in the next round. Let’s get into the match prediction.
Seeded 19th, Bulgaria have surprised many by reaching this stage of the competition. They have not won a medal at the World Championship since 2006 in Japan (bronze).
Bulgaria finished at the top of Pool E, beating Germany and Chile 3-0, either side of one of the shocks of the competition, overcoming the formidable Slovenia 3-2 in game two.
Aleksandar Nikolov has been immense for the team in this competition, currently on 71 points so far, which is the third most of any player to date.
Meanwhile, it has been a stunning return to the World Championships for Portugal. They failed to qualify for every competition since 2006, but are immediately into the last 16 after their absence.
Portugal finished second in their group behind the US, which was the only team to beat them. They took down Cuba 3-1 and Colombia 3-2 in their last two games in the group.
Nuno Marques picked up 19 points in their win against Cuba last time out and leads the team with 46 points in this year’s competition.
